Labette County has a population of 22,000 and sits in the far southeast corner of Kansas. It is geographically split between the Cherokee Lowlands on the east and the Osage Cuestas on the west. The county is unlike most of Kansas in that it has more than twice the rainfall and is filled with a number of creeks and streams, which feed into the Neosho River. The county was named for Pierre LaBette, a French fur trader.
The county seat is Oswego (pop. 2,000) which boasts many outdoor murals and is the home of Lori’s Creative Cakes – the winner of many national cake baking awards. Chetopa (pop. 1,234) is a river town known as the catfish capitol of Kansas, but its bottoms-land also fosters expansive pecan groves. Other smaller communities offer the advantages of rural living with a touch of convenience.
